The Turn in Mystery — Alex Talks

As a guy who has streamed out all of Dark Souls 1, 2, and 3 to their completion, I really wanted to pin down what made them special. What made them work, for me.

It’s easy to jump to the, “oh they’re hard like games aren’t today,” but… I just don’t agree with that. Dark Souls sure as hell isn’t easy, but much like a lot of animation-priority JRPGs, the games are just stuck in their rules and their ways. What makes them special isn’t that they challenge you, it’s that they trust to player not to be an idiot. And if you are an idiot? Well… You’re probably gonna have a bad time.

Playing the first Dark Souls reminds me a lot of playing the first ever Legend of Zelda game, and this Alex Talks really zeroes in on that. Having a lack of direction can suck, but it can also be awesome. You can discover weird things, and games like these tend to have secrets that are, to say the least, mind-boggling. Things that will challenge your dexterity and deductive reasoning in ways that video games rarely do.
