As you may know from the podcast I am a big flying game fan. Games like Warhawk, Starhawk, Ace Combat and Tom Clancy H.A.W.X are all some of my favorites. But there is a new game on the horizon that is in open beta for the PC and is called War Thunder.
War Thunder is a flying MMO, filled with historically accurate planes from World War I and World War II. The game is a nice refresher to the flying game genre having excellent controls, on top which you can use your flight stick controller and a normal console controller as well.
The beta includes five factions that you can play as: America, Britain, Germany, Russia, and Japan, all with customizable planes and equipment. There several playable maps in the current build of the open beta that are quite fun to play, and you can clearly see the detail that has gone into everything from the trees and buildings on the ground to the bullets that are flying out of your guns.
Right now the game mods include Domination, where your team has to capture and hold as many spots on the map until the enemy’s tickets reaches zero. An assault mode, where your teams tanks must attack the other teams tanks with you attacking enemy planes and when there are no more tanks, you attack the enemies airfield to finish the match.
Map locations range from Stalingrad to some of the Pacific Islands. On top of all this there are two tabs that are not open in the beta and that is your fleet tab (possibly battleships) and Army tab (possibly ground combat), but that is just speculation at this point. As this game is on its way to the full release, you can get in on the beta by signing up at http://Warthunder.com, and see what the game has to offer even before release.
Stay tuned to the site for updates on the beta, and don’t forget to hear what I have to say on the Podcast as well.
