Sulfur fills the air from fireworks that burnt mere minutes ago. A dim night showered in sparks and embers from families all around. A small flame illuminates the faces of all those around who impatiently await the char-grilled food. A mirage of red, blue, and white waves flash through the night as a light shines down upon it in remembrance for those who gave our freedom a voice. Like the U.S., video games have laid witness to many great uprisings that led to equality for everyone.
Bioshock: Infinite
Being ripped out of time can be a little mind altering, especially if you’re considered the False Shepherd. Unfortunately for Booker DeWitt, he was plagued as being the anti-hero who would see the demise of Columbia. Although, in spite of being sworn of as the False Shepherd, Booker took arms against the radicals to create humble living for the civilians. Even with Songbird close behind as Patriots fire at random, Booker was able to keep his composure and eventually established a rebellion against Comstock.
Dishonored
Stealth propelled the next character to single handedly take down a corrupt system. As disease sweeps through the streets with weepers, the higher class keeps their noses high in hopes of not noticing the foul stench. Corvo, who was falsely accused of killing 
the Empress, broke free to steadily take revenge on those who wrongly accused him, while managing to begin a silent uprising. Although, you have to play your cards right if you have any intentions of being honored in solid stone.
Titanfall
Mercy will always fall short when the sake of freedom dangles on a thread. Raging constant war with limited supplies means nothing if the cause ensues with compassion. The Militia wages all they can against the IMC in hopes of restoring a way of life that seems like a distant memory. But, before they allow it to fade into folklore, the Militia makes a firm stance, and they refuse to their rights be denied. Each victory is a step closer towards the liberation they seek to take closure in.
Many fight to see that each individual is granted their rights, even if it means the loss of their own. As we kick back by the poolside and sip away at our drinks, take pride in the fact that we have the luxury in being able to do so. Our own freedom has created a series of fictional worlds in which the civilians inspire change against the injustice. We see a piece of ourselves in the underdog because that’s America’s history. Promote your patriotism for the day and soak in the freedom that our culture has granted us through our own rights and video games.
