So another year, another set of ridiculous antics at the Spike Video Game Awards. No, they aren’t a good representation of the industry, but goddamn do they throw out some fantastic announcements. With world premieres of video games, we all grit our teeth and sit through the show to find out what is coming in the coming months.
So, first things first, the announcement to kick off the show as the very special Batman Arkham City trailer. It showed Hugo Strange as the new villain, probably the main villain, although not the only villain. Apparently he was sending some kind of SWAT team after the Dark Knight to find out what he knows, and now he knows Hugo is out for him. Problem is, Hugo knows the Dark Knights secret: he’s Bruce Wayne.
Next up was a HUGE announcement from Bethesda Studios, Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. It was a simple teaser alluding to some big bad dragons bringing some hellfire down from the sky. Now I’m not very familiar with the Elder Scrolls games, so I can’t tell you what the “Elder Scrolls warned us” of, but it doesn’t look good. Also, the release date of 11-11-11 was revealed, so look for that very soon.
After this was the confirmation of Kratos in Mortal Kombat ONLY for the PS3, which showed Kratos fuckin’ shit up, and about to whup some Sub-Zero ass.
There was a little bit of Thor after that, but it wasn’t very impressive, especially visually, so this thing was a big pile of “meh”.
The announcement I was excited about the most was the Mass Effect 3 teaser, showing the Reapers reigning down hellfire on Earth, and a soldier described millions of people dying within the first week. This is exactly what I and probably most other Mass Effect fans expected and hoped for. Looks like Shepherd is humanity and Earth’s last hope. Oh yeah, and did I mention its coming Holiday 2011? Yeah, just around the corner.
Then there was some sexy-ass Resistance 3. There was some actual gameplay shown, and lemme tell ya, it was pretty sexy. You play Capelli, which if you finished Resistance 2, you probably would have figured, and he is making his last push. Oh, and he is going to have a sledgehammer. Just saying.
Prototype 2. I know, the first one was pretty terrible, but the new one might not be as bad. You play some Sergeant who is actually hunting Alex Mercer, the protagonist from the first game. An interesting twist, but lets just hope the game is overall better.
Guerlmo Del Torro took the stage to put up a teaser for his new game called “Insane”. It was nothing but a teaser of some black tenticle-like objects wrapping around people-like objects, and then the logo showed. Nothing excited, but apparently it is coming in 2013. Lets hope the world doesn’t end before then.
Some stupid Portal 2 teaser was next and didn’t show any gameplay at all. It was a co-op teaser that just showed the two robots you play being put together.
Some Forza 4 teaser was shown next, coming in 2011, nothing but a car revving up.
Some SSX trailer was shown next, its called “Deadly Descents” and apparently it is some dark intense game where you go down the deadliest peaks in the world. Looks dumb to be honest.
Finally, at the end of the show, what we had all been waiting for, was the Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception trailer. Plenty of voice-over dialogue of Drake basically telling Sully “be careful what you wish for”. Apart from a in-game engine cinematic, there were just short, assorted shots of gameplay shown. The big thing that came along with it was the release date: November 1st, 2011. Get hype.
And that’s it! That’s all you should care about from the VGAs, the big-ass announcements. All the teasers described here can be found over at http://www.gametrailers.com! Gotta say, 2011 is gonna be a good fucking year.
SSX – dumb? You dumber, lol
